Cefalù, enchanting little town on the northern coast of Sicily, 74 Kms from the island capital Palermo, stretches out on a strip of land, in front of the sea.

It lies under an impressive head-like shaped rock from which comes the name Cephaloedium.
Little is known about the origin of Cefalù. On the massive rock there are remains of a set of fortified walls, a castle and a megalithic building known as the “Temple of Diana”.

Ruled in turn by Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs and Normans, the town is famous for the magnificent Arabo-Norman Cathedral, built by King Roger II. The apse and the vault of the Church are decorated with polychromatic mosaics, towered over by the figure of Christ Pantocrator.

The town, which still today presents medieval details, preserves some other priceless monuments such as the medieval wash-house, the Osterio Magno, the Mandralisca Museum where the powerful portrait of an Unknown Man of the master Antonello da Messina is housed.

Remarkable are, also, the Cloister and the Sanctuary of Gibilmanna, religious and cultural center, 15 Kms from Cefalù.

Cefalù is included in the list of the most beautiful historic towns and villages in Italy, thanks to its artistic and natural beauties, cultural events, shows, services, climate, traditional cuisine and hospitality.
Because of its position, Cefalù gives tourists the opportunity to visit other areas of Sicily.

Cefalù, incantevole località sulla costa settentrionale della Sicilia, a 74 km da Palermo, si protende sul mare, ai piedi di una possente rupe a forma di capo o testa da cui deriva il nome di “Cephaloedium”.

Di origini ignote ha sul promontorio, resti di fortificazioni, di un castello e di un edificio megalitico noto come “ Tempio di Diana “. Passata attraverso il dominio di Greci, Romani, Bizantini, Arabi e Normanni, è celebre per il suo Duomo Arabo-Normanno, voluto da Ruggero II, fastoso nella policromia dei mosaici ove troneggia la figura del Cristo Pantocratore Benedicente.

Il paese, che presenta dettagli medievali, ha altri preziosi scrigni d’arte come: il Lavatoio, l’Osterio Magno, il Museo Mandralisca, all’interno del quale viene custodito il celebre “Ritratto d’Ignoto” di Antonello da Messina, il Chiostro ed il Santuario di Gibilmanna, notevole centro religioso e culturale a 15 km da Cefalù.

Cefalù è nella lista dei borghi più belli d’Italia, per bellezze naturali e artistiche, gli eventi culturali, gli spettacoli di arte varia, i servizi, per il clima, la cucina e l’ospitalità. Città di grande interesse per i turisti che, per la sua posizione, ne fanno anche un’ottima base per esplorare altre località della Sicilia.
